Screening dates for William McLaren - An Artist Out of Time

Our documentary about the artist William McLaren is being screened in Glasgow, Inverness and Dundee in the coming weeks as part of the Glasgow Film Festival's 'Great Scots on Tour'. It will be shown with our short film And So Goodbye.

The screening dates and times for William McLaren - An Artist Out of Time are as follows:

William McLaren was a Scottish painter, illustrator and decorative artist. From humble beginnings in the 1920s in Cardenden, a mining town in Fife, McLaren went on to produce decorative painting in the rooms of some of the finest houses in the UK. He was a prolific illustrator and designed dust jackets for over 150 books. His illustrations also appeared regularly in the 1950s and 1960s in the Radio Times.

We traced hundreds of his works and gathered the testimony of many of those who knew him. McLaren died in 1987, aged 64, leaving behind a range of work that will surprise and delight many people.

William McLaren – An Artist Out of Time has been selected for the 2010 Glasgow Film Festival. It will be screened on Tuesday 23rd February at 18:30 and Thursday 25th February at 15:30.

William McLaren was a prolific Scottish painter, illustrator and decorative artist who died in 1987 and has never received the recognition he deserves. This fascinating pioneering documentary has traced hundreds of his works and gathered the testimony of those who knew him.

A graduate of the Edinburgh College Of Art, McLaren was a regular illustrator for the Radio Times and created a series of paintings for the staircase of Hopetoun House and many commissions for public buildings where he developed his trompe l’oeil style. Screening with the award-winning documentary And So Goodbye which led the filmmakers to their interest in McLaren.

Our 51-minute documentary William McLaren – An Artist Out Of Time was given its first screening at Edinburgh’s Filmhouse on December 2nd 2009 at 6.00pm. The film was shown with our prize-winning short film And So Goodbye. The films have been programmed in the Made In Edinburgh series which showcases work by local film makers. Director Jim Hickey and Producer Robin Mitchell talked about the films after the screening in what turned out to be a very lively Q & A session.

Finding some hand-made film magazines at home, Robin Mitchell learns about a film that his father starred in and produced in 1943. With his father too ill to tell him about it, he embarks on a search that leads him to the film and to the home of its director Robert Edwards. In a revealing interview, Robert Edwards talks about his lifelong passion for films and tells the story behind the film's production by a small group of enthusiasts in Fife. Robin eventually reunites the filmmakers at an emotional 60th anniversary screening of the film.
